PLEXIGLAS® International Building Code (IBC) Compliance

PLEXIGLAS® acrylic products meet the International Code Council (ICC) requirements for light transmitting plastics as outlined in chapter 26 of the IBC. These requirements include standards for self-ignition, burn rate and smoke density.

Self-Ignition Temperature (ASTM D 1929)

Plastic materials must have a self-ignition temperature of 650° F or greater. PLEXIGLAS® products meet this requirement as they have a self-ignition temperature that typically falls between 740° and 880° F.

Horizontal Burn Rate (ASTM D 635)

Plastic materials that have a burning extent of 1 inch or less have a CC1 classification. Plastic materials that have a burning rate of 2.5 inches per minute or less have a CC2 classification. PLEXIGLAS® products have a CC2 classification since they have a typical burn rate between 1and 2 inches per minute.

Smoke Density (ASTM D 2843)

Plastic materials must have a smoke density rating no greater than 75 where tested in the thickness intended for use. PLEXIGLAS® products meet this requirement as they typically generate a smoke density value between 4 and 12.

The IBC limits the use of approved plastic materials. Limitations include the size of each panel, distance between panels as well as building type, height and location. Consult the prevailing code to ensure compliance.

In addition to IBC compliance, many PLEXIGLAS® products have been tested per the ICC-ES skylight standard (AC 16). The results of this testing and a statement of IBC compliance can be found in the ECC-ES report #ESR-1653. This report is located on the web at: http://www.icc-es.org/reports/pdf_files/UBC/ESR-1653.pdf

Flammability (UL 94)

PLEXIGLAS® products typically have an HB classification with a minimum thickness of 1.5 mm. PLEXIGLAS® products are listed by UL under category QFMZ2 and Arkema file number E39487. This listing can be found at the following web address:
